The NEA Big Read Lakeshore, sponsored by Hope College, is an annual, month-long community reading initiative held each fall. With the support of more than 100 community partners, the program offers over 50 events both on campus and throughout the surrounding communities. At its core, the Big Read fosters connection and understanding through the shared experience of reading and discussing selected books. These events, guided by thoughtful questions, encourage participants to listen to one another, engage in meaningful dialogue, and explore timely and relevant themes.
This year’s themes invite readers of all ages to reflect on journeys—whether physical, emotional, or metaphorical—along with personal freedom, power structures, and the transformative power of imagination. Throughout October and November, residents of Ottawa, Allegan, and Muskegon counties are encouraged to participate in a wide array of events, including lectures, film screenings, performances, and more. Each program is designed to deepen our collective understanding of the selected books and the issues they raise, while fostering stronger connections among Lakeshore community members.
